LAKE FOREST, Ill- The girls field hockey team played host to the rival New Trier Trevians Monday as they looked to go 2-0 against the Trevians for the regular season. The Scouts traveled to New Trier back on September 9th and knocked off the Trevians 2-1 thanks to a Madden Plante goal in overtime. With that game in early September–and the win in the IHSFHA State Championship over New Trier in mind–the Scouts looked to assert their dominance on the Trevians yet again.

It was a beautiful evening for field hockey at Varsity Field and a huge, energetic crowd was on hand to cheer on their respective, perennial winners. 

A defensive bout was expected between these two teams, and that is exactly what ensued. Both teams battled and looked for a chance to break through. When the two teams met earlier in the season they combined for just two goals in the first 60 minutes of play. As both teams battled to find space, the young sophomore Julia Hender found a gap in the New Trier defense. Logan Hanekamp made a cross field pass to Hender who found the back of the net with the first goal of the game.

The Trevians were not phased by the 1-0 deficit, however, as New Trier relied on their big game experience to carry them through. Just a few moments after the Scout goal, New Trier’s Jenn Kirby was able to find the goal to even the score at 1-1. With the game tied, the Scouts’ were looking to find another goal before the half, and Hender was hungry for more. With the confidence from her first goal in mind, Hender found space near the goal once again and poked the ball in for another first half goal to put the Scouts up 2-1 at the half.

Following halftime, the Trevians knew they had to strike fast to keep themselves in the game. New Trier managed a couple of corner situations a few minutes into the second half, but the Scouts defense was strong yet again and kept the scoring chances at bay. With a one goal lead, Maggie Mick found the goal to put the Scouts up two midway through the second half. Mick, a junior who has shined in recent games, found the back of the net again on Monday to keep up her red hot play.

It was a big day already for the young Scouts players, and that theme held firm as sophomore Gracie McGowan put the game on ice with a late goal to put the Scouts up 4-1. Lake Forest ran out the clock and ended up winning by a final score of 4-1 to defeat the rival Trevians in another big matchup.

After securing the win over New Trier, the Scouts will set their sights on conference rival Stevenson Patriots as they come to West Campus on Wednesday at 6:15 pm. With the end of the regular season in sight, the Scouts will look to finish the year with another playoff run all with the sights set on back to back state titles.
