NORTHBROOK, IL – The Scouts Varsity Gold team rolled into North Shore Ice Arena for a late-night Scholastic Hockey League matchup against the defending champion, New Trier Green (NTG). The Scouts trailed the Trevians in the season series 0-2 before the game and needed to make a statement win. Although unable to come out with a win, the team looked like a playoff contender keeping the game within one goal.
New Trier Green, who were also National finalists, showed some weakness after losing its perfect season with losses against Loyola Gold and Glenbrook South.
The Scouts have played NTG well in the past. Although they lost 6-3 in their last match-up, the Scouts had control for most of the game, leading 3-2 before giving up four goals in the third period.
The Scouts entered this match-up with a conference record of 8-11, including a huge win over Carmel during the Pucks and Poms game on Thanksgiving eve, as well as a pair of wins over Stevenson.
The Trevians started the game hot, scoring on a breakaway into the Scouts defensive zone around three minutes into the first period. Lake Forest answered after seniors Thomas Santinello and Andrew Marsch found themselves in a two-on-one. Santinello caught Marsch on the one timer, leveling the score with 6:45 left in the period.
Lake Forest kept the momentum rolling after the end of the first, going up 2-1 on the Trevians following a goal from Junior Noah Kowalski, the first SHL goal of his career. The Scouts defense held off the quick moving NTG offense.
Before the game, Scouts goalie coach Mark Passalino told Sommers, “You cannot let them score on you,” referencing the Trevians fast paced offense.
The Trevians leveled the score after a puck got past Sommers, a rare mental mistake for the two year varsity veteran.
The Scouts found themselves in a powerplay twice. Senior forward Jackson Drum had one shot hit the bar and stay out of the goal, which eventually led to a Trevians short-handed goal due to an empty net during a six on four.
With just under seven seconds left in the third period, Senior defensemen Landon Milz scored to make the final score 4-3 in favor of the Trevians.
The Scouts fell to 8-12 after losing to Loyola Gold 3-1 on Sunday night. The Scouts finish up the first half of SHL play against Fenwick and take on non-conference opponent Highland park to finish
