Devastating news came out of Miami Sunday morning reporting the tragic death of the 24 year old Miami Marlins ace pitcher Jose Fernandez. Fernandez and two other friends were out boating Sunday morning around 3:00 when they plowed into rocks near the entrance of Miami Harbor. Divers recovered two bodies later that were found under the boat while one body was found lying on the rocks. The Miami Marlins cancelled their scheduled Sunday game against the Braves following the tragic event. Jose Fernandez had a mother, father, sister and a girlfriend who announced one week ago to be pregnant with a baby girl.

Jose Fernandez was one of current baseball’s great pitchers. He was the 2013 Rookie of the Year as well as making appearances in the 2013 and 2016 MLB All Star Game. According to USA Today, in Fernandez’s career he posted a 2.58 ERA and was 38-17. In his final career start, Fernandez pitched 8 innings against the Washington Nationals and did not allow a single run. According to some of his Marlin teammates, he said it was perhaps the best game he pitched in his career.

As the word spread about Jose Fernandez’s tragic death MLB players and coaches reacted sympathetically and the MLB issued a motion that all teams must take a moment of silence for Fernandez. Don Mattingly–along with other Marlins players–broke down in tears during the Marlins press conference on Sunday. Mattingly talked about how he played the game like a kid and showed an immense amount of passion for the game of baseball. While every major league team around the league paid their respects, David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox broke down in tears during the moment of silence.

On social media many MLB players showed their respect for the young legend. Some other players from different professional leagues also decided to pitch in their thoughts and prayers for Jose and his family. Lebron James said on Facebook and Instagram, “RIP and prayers up to your family young king! #gonetosoon”. Before the Miami Dolphins held a moment of silence for Jose Fernandez, a handful of their players shared their condolences.

Whether you are a Marlins or not, it’s tough not to feel hurt for Jose’s family and the Marlins organization. One of the best parts about being a baseball fan and, quite frankly, being a fan of any other professional sport is you get to watch young stars like Jose Fernandez grow in talent and become something better. Fernandez was potentially on his way to becoming a MLB Hall of Fame candidate and sadly the hopes of that were cut short. MLB fans around the world were hurt and shocked by the news that was released Sunday morning. Today, not just fans of the Marlins, but fans of baseball are grieving the loss of a player, a teammate, a friend, spouse, and future father.
