Looking to take the crown in the Regional Championship, the boys volleyball team (25-7) played against the Warren Blue Devils (21-15) Wednesday night in Gurnee. Having split the series 1-1 during the regular season, this was the perfect test to see which team was superior. And, with the great improvement Warren has made throughout the season, the match was a toss-up.
The Scouts struggled initially, with the Devils jumping out the gates quickly. 6’ 5” Senior Alex Jiang was rolling early on with hard slams that the Scouts struggled to defend. But, just as this happened the Scouts adjusted their defensive setup, leading to 3 blocks on Jiang in the first game. Nerves were high, yet the Scouts managed to edge out the first game 25-23. Both teams are senior-dominated and played with a burning passion that they didn’t want this to be the end. In the second game, the Scouts continued to read their plays, forcing Warren to play uncomfortably. With the pressure on, Justin McCartney controlled the ball very well, feeding Kevin Lamp to close out the final game 25-22 and effectively winning the Regional Championship. Both games came down to the wire but the toughness of the Scouts gave them the winning edge.
The Scouts will take on Libertyville Wildcats in the Sectional Semifinals at Grant High School on Friday night at 6:00. Come cheer on the Scouts!
