In Honor of Talking Like a Pirate

In+Honor+of+Talking+Like+a+Pirate

September 19th is National Talk Like a Pirate Day.

If you’ve ever felt that your true dialect matches that of the high seas, then you will be happy to learn it’s National Talk Like a Pirate Day. Started 21 years ago in 1995 by two pirate enthusiast friends (named Cap’n Slappy and Ol’ Chumbucket) who simply believed that September 19th should be National Talk Like a Pirate Day, and sent the information to humor columnist Dave Barry, the holiday has gained national popularity.

Google and Facebook have joined in on the fun of the holiday–by changing the settings of your language on both sites, you can read all your controls not in regular English, but Pirate English.

On Facebook, go to the lower right corner of your feed, where you will find a language link is light gray. Click the plus sign next to the link, and select English (Pirate). The search bar will switch to “scour fer scallywags, ports, n’ various sundries”, the status box text to “what be troubling yeh?” and “trending” to “popular booty”, among many other different changes.

On Google as well, look to the bottom right to “Settings”. Select “search settings”, then “language” on the left. Pirate English should be found on under show more. Once selected, Google will switch to pirate speak as well and change “images” to “engravin’s”, “results” to “islands” and, of course, “search” to “searrrch”.

And, in what is probably the most exciting news of all, Krsipy Kreme is offering a free donut to anyone who comes into shop talking like a pirate. Better yet, if you dress up with at least three pirate accessories (such as a hook for a hand, eyepatch, or parrot on the soldier) you get a dozen glazed donuts for free. Think of it as plundering without the violence.

So, happy plundering!
