LAKE FOREST, Ill.–After going on an embarrassing winless streak, the Lake Forest Scouts varsity hockey team has officially got back on the right track after defeating Lane Tech on the road Saturday evening. Monday night, the Scouts took to their home ice against Evanston looking to pick up their second straight victory. The Wildkits have experienced an up and down season this year. At (5-7-1), they are playing below .500, but came in hot to Lake Forest College on a three-game win streak. Lake Forest’s seven goals last night tells the whole story–pure obliteration.
The man who scored the game-winning goal last week was the first to score last night. Trevor Allen, who has now scored four goals this season, put the puck behind Wildkits goaltender Jacob Wolner, giving the Scouts the early lead. Just over 30 seconds later, Lake Forest was on the attack again. This time it was Griffin Slobodnik who scored on an assist from Stefan Riedel with 3:49 left in the period. Already with a two goal lead, the Scouts came out firing in the second period, easily putting the game out of reach.
14 seconds into the second period, Evanston was able to score one of their only two goals when Gallun Fritz scored on an assist from Kofi Hopps. The Scouts, however, had a huge answer. Hunter Heitman scored in his second straight game with 7:48 remaining in the second period, giving Lake Forest momentum to put something incredible together. Close to two minutes later, Jack Kaptrosky got on the scoreboard when he fired one past Wolner. The madness didn’t stop there, though, as 48 seconds later, Slobodnik scored his second goal of the game increasing the Lake Forest lead to three. To top off a wild second period, Will Dee scored with nine seconds remaining on an assist from Brendan Manfred and Trevor Allen. At that point, the score was 6-1, which is a crooked number for a hockey game. The Scouts kept kicking the Wildkits while they were down, eventually putting the game out of reach before the puck dropped in the third period.
Evanston was able to score one more goal in the third that did nothing to change the result of the game. Later in the period, Hunter Dee scored on an assist from his brother, putting an end to what was a signature Scouts hockey win over a team that had won three straight heading into Monday night. The final score was 7-2, which was more goals scored by the Scouts than they have in their past three games. The Lake Forest varsity hockey team is now rolling and will be dangerous for all of their future competitors.
With a combined total of 11 goals scored in the Scouts’ past two games, it is safe to say that their offense is clicking. Step by step, the Lake Forest defense is also starting to play better, but there is still plenty of room for improvement.
Up next for the Scouts varsity hockey team is (7-2-1) New Trier. They currently lead the Champions Varsity Conference and are notorious for embarrassing their opponents. The Scouts, however, have collected themselves and are hot coming into their Wednesday’s matchup. This will be a hard-fought battle between two of the best teams in the IHSHL.
