VERNON HILLS, Ill.–In a 4:30 matinee tournament game hosted by Vernon Hills High School, the Lake Forest Scouts came up just short in their first game of the season. In a slow-paced, low-scoring game, the Scouts had trouble finding their shooting touch from the field as they only managed to shoot 21% from the field, including only 10% from 3-point range. Despite winning the rebounding and assists battle over LFA, they were still unable to battle back to victory.
After trailing early on, the Scouts used a run in the second quarter, powered by layups from Ellie Pearson and Finola Summerville, to earn the lead. The Caxys, however, battled back to regain the lead in the fourth frame. Down by four with less than two minutes left, Grace Tirzmalis connected on a 3-pointer to cut the lead to one, but the Scouts would get no closer. The Caxys added one free throw in the waning seconds of the game and the Scouts couldn’t connect on a last second attempt, rendering the final score 36-34 in favor of LFA.
Finola Summerville led the Scouts with 8 points while Grace Tirzmalis and Jen Whittington each chipped in 7 points. Halle Douglass led the Scouts with 10 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals.
The Scouts return to action on Thursday when they play the host school of the tournament, Vernon Hills, at 7:30 pm.
