NORTH CHICAGO, Ill.– The boys golf team traveled to Willow Glen Golf Club on Tuesday, looking to capture their third conference title in a row. Each team brought seven players as play got underway on yet another beautiful late September day.
Lake Forest swept the regular season matches by defeating the likes of Stevenson, Libertyville, and Mundelein. With that success in mind, the Scouts came out fast to assert their dominance on the North Suburban Conference.
Senior Jed Thomas started his round off well as he hovered around or below even par for the majority of the round. Unfortunately, a late double bogey on hole 17 left Thomas with a round of 73 (+1). Meanwhile, fellow senior Scott Frevert was playing to the same tune as Thomas, but he also suffered a late bogey to finish at even par with a round of 72 (E). That score was low enough to force a playoff against Stevenson’s Matthew Schawel. Frevert failed to win the individual medalist honor as he lost by one stroke in the playoff, but the senior nonetheless put together another quality round. Frevert is established as a captain who has had a lot in his career for the Scouts program over the course of his four-year varsity career.
The conference finals weren’t all about the seniors, though, as junior Danny Fisher fired a 75 (+3) and freshman Pierce Grieve carded a 73 (+1) in his first conference finals appearance.
The Scouts ended up taking the low scores of Frevert, Thomas, Grieve and Fisher for a final score of 293 strokes. That score, combined with the regular season sweep, led Lake Forest to yet another conference championship under the direction of Head Coach Jim Matheson. With the first post season test under their belts, the Scouts will head to Shepherd’s Crook Golf Course in Zion next Tuesday with their sights set on the IHSA Regional championship. Be sure to follow The Forest Scout for the latest information on the Scouts’ postseason run.
The Scouts’ last trophy at the IHSA State Finals came in 2011, when they hoisted the state championship trophy. Lake Forest last qualified for the IHSA State Finals, held at The Den in Bloomington, Illinois, in 2016.
