Perhaps one of the most talented fall sports teams, the Lake Forest Scouts Boys Golf team, added yet another 1st place tournament finish to their season resume on Saturday afternoon at Bittersweet Golf Club in Gurnee. After winning the highly touted Prep Tour North vs. South tournament in the opening match of the season, which featured some of the state’s best squads, the Scouts have continued to collect plaques in the early season.
Though the Scouts have had different players step up in different tournaments throughout the season (Jed Thomas finished 1st in the Prep Tour tournament, Danny Fisher won the Loyola, GBS, Loyola, Lake Forest quad tournament), Connor Polender paced the Scouts with a 2-under par 70 on Saturday for medalist honors. Close behind Polender was freshman Pierce Grieve, who fired a 2nd place 73. The Scouts also counted scores from Jed Thomas (74) and Danny Fisher (75) for a team total of 292.
One of Lake Forest’s best team attributes this season is their depth. Aside from Polender, Grieve, and Thomas, the Scouts’ roster boasts 4 year Varsity player Scott Frevert, Michael Seaman, an individual state qualifier a season ago, Patrick Moorhead, and senior captain Wesley Dixon.
Though it is still early, the Scouts definitely have the talent and depth to compete for a state title in 2017. The Scouts have won 4 state titles in the school’s history with current Head Coach Jim Matheson leading the Scouts in 3 of those championship seasons. After failing to qualify for the state finals as a team last season, the Scouts are hungry and poised for a great run this fall.
