I originally looked at the school because of its high ranking for my intended major. When I visited, I could totally picture myself there. What made you interested in applying to this school?
I’ve always known about UIUC through LFHS alumni and friends–all of whom have loved their experience. I became especially interested after attending a masterclass with Professor John Dee and speaking with him about his studio, as well as meeting the welcoming and supportive music faculty. UIUC’s musical opportunities—like concerto and chamber competitions, masterclasses, and gigs—really drew me in. I was also looking for a school with a wide range of majors rather than a conservatory environment where music can feel more isolated or separate from the rest of campus. I value being part of a unified campus where music students are integrated with other disciplines. UIUC’s big college-town atmosphere, strong research environment, and the integration of music and STEM—along with its many internships and career opportunities—make it a great fit for me.
What are you most looking forward to about it?
I’m most excited for meeting people, taking classes in my interests of all sorts of disciplines, living in a great college town, the game days, the food scene, the networking opportunities, clubs, studio class, and performing in Krannert Hall.

Hampden-Sydney College
What is your major?
Political Science & Pre-Law
What is the school’s mascot?
Yank the Tiger
What made you interested in applying to this school?
My mom went to the sister school, so I was familiar with Hampden-Sydney but unsure at first about an all-boys college: visiting and watching a lacrosse game changed that. I liked the strong school spirit, close community, and the honor code—“A Hampden-Sydney man shall never lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do”—which is clearly lived out on campus.I applied because I wanted a place with strong tradition, community, and opportunities to grow academically and personally.
What are you most looking forward to about it?
What I’m most looking forward to is getting involved on campus both athletically and socially. I hope to play lacrosse at the club or varsity level and be part of a competitive, tight-knit team. I also plan to rush, join clubs, and stay active around campus to meet new people and build connections. On the academic side, I’m interested in internships related to law, business, and national security–including opportunities with the FBI–to gain real-world experience during college.
