Last week I was sitting in the MRC stressing out over my upcoming AP Precalc exam, and after a couple of minutes, I could hear Mr. Mergl rummaging around in his candy drawer before appearing next to me and silently sliding over a Reese’s Cup.

A small gesture like this may not seem like a big deal, but it just goes to show the type of person Mr. Mergl is. He understands that teaching isn’t just about conveying content but rather connecting with the student. By engaging one-on-one with each student, Mr. Mergl really understands how each individual learns. His attention to detail and dedication to figuring out how each student learns is what truly sets him apart.
Mr. Mergl has personally made a huge impact on my high school math experience. After working with him in the MRC – often several days a week, for almost three years now – he completely understands how to teach in a way that I will understand. For example, he will slowly walk me through a unit from the beginning to the end, break it down to the basics, and not get frustrated if I don’t understand right away. Sometimes, he even offers new tricks or shortcuts that I would have known without him. When I am feeling discouraged, he knows how to lift my spirits, and even when I need guidance unrelated to math, he always offers his insight.

Most of the students who come to Mr. Mergl are already confused and frustrated; those students need someone who is able to help them find ease when all they feel is unease. Each individual has different things that calm them down. For some, it may be a joke and for others, that could only make matters worse. Mr. Mergl knows how to differentiate between when a joke might land well and when a student just needs some encouragement.
Personally, I have been on the receiving end of both. Mr. Mergl has a strong ability to help students put things in perspective. I have come into the MRC worrying that my future depends on how well I do on one Pre-calc test, and he always knows how to call me out in a funny way that makes me recognize the absurdity of my overreaction.
This year Mr. Mergl is retiring after being a part of the Scout community since August 2015. During that time period, he has made a positive impact on countless students. In my three years at LFHS Mr. Mergl has been one of my greatest coaches, mentors, and cheerleaders. Long after his departure, students will still remember his patience, kindness, and the support he offered when they needed it most.
