Call me the Grinch, but I don’t like Christmas music one bit. The second I hear that Mariah Carey “defrosted” I feel my holiday spirit shrivel up like a dry pine branch. While everyone is swaying to the classics I’m silently cringing waiting for the next song to play, or if I’m lucky… a whole playlist change.
Don’t get me wrong I love any Ariana Grande cover, and if you know me I can go bar for bar in Drummer Boy by Justin Bieber, but the originals don’t hit the same level anymore and are possibly the musical equivalent to lukewarm cocoa.
Honestly after hearing “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” for the 40th time in one day, I’m ready to pack up the Christmas spirit and move on to the next holiday… whatever that one is. Christmas music has simply become too repetitive.
It’s not that I hate the holidays- I am obsessed with the lights, cookie decorating, the true meaning of Christmas, and gift giving but something about Christmas music needs a major rebrand, preferably with fewer jingle bells and chestnuts roasting.
I believe more artists should come out with their own Christmas albums instead of recycling the same repetitive covers, it would bring some much needed freshness and actual joy to the holiday season. Imagine artists like Chris Stapleton dropping a soulful, holiday track. Or even Tyler Childers adding his own interpretation and twist to the holiday season instead of highlighting the same songs we’ve heard since as early as I can remember.
And I know I’m not the only one- there’s definitely a silent army of people out there pretending to enjoy these songs while internally wanting to climb up a chimney and never come back.
Until then, I’ll be here patiently waiting for an artist to single handedly save the holiday soundtrack cycle we’ve been stuck in since the dinosaur age.

The problem is that most Christmas music (especially what you find on store aisles and broadcast waves) is the same repetitive, stale set of a few dozen songs.
There is actual good Christmas music out there, such as Tenma Maemi’s cover of “I’m gonna kill Santa Claus” by Danny Gonzales. However, no radio station or grocery store will try something that’s both new and good.
