In the middle of a busy school week, it’s easy to forget that there’s a whole world beyond these classroom walls. Between homework, sports, and the constant buzz of notifications, it’s hard for students to remember to slow down and take a break. Many have the same idea of a “break”: scrolling on your phone or passing some time in between piles of homework. However, going outside is a better option. Going outside is proven to show more than just being a space to clear your mind. It makes you happier, healthier, and even more productive.
For students at Lake Forest High School, balancing academics, extracurriculars, and social life can feel overwhelming. Stepping outside, even for a couple of minutes per day, offers a much-needed reset. Studies have found that natural light boosts focus and mood, while time spent in green spaces lowers stress levels. Whether it’s a walk around Market Square, sitting by Lake Michigan, or just studying outside on a nice day, the simple act of being outdoors can make a huge difference.
“Taking even five minutes for fresh air, even when it’s cold outside, can drastically reduce your stress levels, increase your energy, boost concentration, help clear your mind, and improve your overall mood. My entire family spends time outside each day for these reasons. Fresh air is so good for the soul! Don’t believe me? try it! You will often see me walking a lap outside the building on any given day for all of the reasons above,” said Social Worker Maggie Harmsen.
Beyond mental health, getting outdoors promotes physical wellness. Fresh air and movement can increase energy levels, improve sleep, and strengthen the immune system. In addition, with so much time spent in front of screens, going outdoors gives students a rare opportunity to unplug and connect with the real world, and each other.
“I go on walks often to clear my mind, even when I don’t feel like it. However, I do it because it ends up making me feel so much better afterwards,” said senior Nora Kelly.
Our school emphasizes the importance of going outside by offering movie nights on the Varsity Field, giving students opportunities to take a break from school and reset outside. Many students love participating in these activities, as it is their only break from all their stressors going on in their lives. I enjoy going to the new movie nights on the field to take a nice break in the week; it allows me to destress and spend time outside with my friends.
“The movie nights at our school offer great opportunities for students to not just connect with nature but allow for you to connect with others, not just through Snapchat and social media. It’s a fun event to go to and such a great way to reset,” said sophomore Natalie Devora.
In a world where schedules are packed and stress is constant, going outside isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. So next time you find yourself glued to your phone or cramming for a test, take a few minutes to step outside. Sometimes the best way to get ahead is to pause, take a breath, and remember that there’s life beyond the classroom.
