The Varsity Scouts Hockey Team traveled to New York this past weekend for a three game tournament. The Scouts left with a 1-2 record, the win coming against the Jamestown Raiders. Out of the four captains, Noah Kowalski and Jack Walsh were unable to play in the tournament due to injury. With only two captains, Tommy Swift and Frank Catalano, the Scouts had to find a way to maintain team chemistry in order to compete with their opponents.
“I wish I was there, and I’m bummed that I couldn’t help my team when they needed me,” Walsh said. Due to taking a puck to the foot, Walsh is week to week with his injury.
In the first game, the Scouts lost a tight battle to the Franklin Regional Panthers 2-1. Junior Jack Milliman recorded the goal for the Scouts. The Scouts lacked discipline in the first game, spending too much time in the penalty box. Moving forward, staying out of the penalty box was a big focus for the Scouts.
In the second game, the Scouts lost to Holy Ghost Prep 3-0. The Scouts said that they didn’t feel ready, and felt they should’ve been able to compete better with Holy Ghost Prep. “We were all just really tired from the day and the night before. Everyone looked drained on the ice,” said Frank Catalano.
In their final game, the Scouts beat the Raiders in a rematch. Sophomore Nate Robbins scored a hat-trick to aid their 8-2 victory. Catalano was also a big contributor to the win with two goals of his own. The Scouts will look to rebound from their performance this weekend in their next game against Loyola Gold at Heartland arena. The Scouts won 5-2 against Loyola the last time they played, and will hope to recreate their success again on Saturday.
