After finishing 3rd in the State Tournament in 2023, LFHS Varsity Field Hockey is ready for another successful season. With a significant amount of games under their belt, the Scouts are looking like a team that will make it back to the State Tournament this year. Racking up wins left and right, the team has won some major games to get a record of 9-4-1.
With a new look to the team this year, the Scouts have had to adjust their play and approach each game differently to enhance their chances of winning. After losing many impactful players from last year, the Scouts have created a new scheme to allow them to be successful.
“Losing multiple 4-year starters and record-setting players takes some time for the team to adjust,” said Head Coach Cat Catanzaro. “Changing some structures and adding in new wrinkles to our play has allowed our players to step into leadership roles.”
Losing many major starters was a hard thing for the Scouts to adjust to as they lost matches to New Trier, Christian Academy, and Villa Duchesne to start the season. Since then, they have bounced back to win 7 straight games with major wins against Loyola Academy and Glenbard West.
Team chemistry has also been a major contributor to the team’s recent success.
“Everyone on the team supports each other. We communicate well and we all play with a sense of unity and passion. To win important games, we work as a team instead of individuals. We all work until the last second and never give up,” said senior Captain Lulu Keil.
The Scouts have had some breakout players this year who have helped the team succeed. Katherine St. Amand, who leads the team with 10 goals, Keil, who leads with 5 assists, and Megan Ross, who leads the team with 118 steals.
With their current record, the Scouts aim to make it to the State Tournament and compete for a State Championship.
“I feel very confident about our team making it to state because the effort and determination we put in differentiates ourselves from a lot of other teams,” said senior Brooke Bolton.
The Scouts look to improve their record and continue their momentum on Friday against DuPont Manual to close out Week 4 of the season.
