Lake Forest High School has been and always will be one of the most originally designed high schools in the nation. From the outside, there is no electronic marquee or sprawling, massive concrete structure made of slate or stone to house the enrollment of LFHS. Although the slowly growing ivy crawling its way into covering the brick entrance in the front of the Gothic-style architectural masterpiece is a recognizable facet of the school, the personality of the building itself truly takes place on the inside, where students past and present have the ability to shape the aesthetic of the school. The things that lie within the building is what makes this school stand out from most. From the notable intelligent and creative minds that stroll in everyday to the excellent classes that excel us into a bright future comes the art that brings LFHS to life.
Over the years at Lake Forest High School, there have been many admirable artistic works shown off in the halls of the school. Some of these works include “The Exquisite Corpse”, “Fishes and Scales”, “Lake Forest High School Lacrosse”, and “Moxie”. These breathtaking art pieces were done by students from over the years, even one dating as for back to 1998. This art is what makes Lake Forest High School so appealing to walk through and be apart of, the inclusion of history in the building’s makeup
“The Exquisite Corpse” was completed by several artists, all working on a certain section of the painting. The inspiration behind this piece was to follow a technique invented by surrealists where a collection of words or images is collectively assembled. The theme of this piece was faces, in which each artist included his or her face in their section.
Fishes and scales was collaborated and made by a large number of artists. The original picture was made in 1959. However, 6 years ago, a ceramics class created this picture into a sectional ceramics piece in which, like The Exquisite Corpse, each artist works on a single section of the piece which are then all put together as a whole.
One painting that really encapsulates Lake Forest High School as a place of beauty is “Lake Forest High School Lacrosse” by Mark McMahon, donated by the 2009 Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team. It depicts the High School as a place of collaboration, with everyone around the sidelines supporting their school sports team. The painting also captures the physical beauty of the front of the school.
One of the most iconic paintings ever presented in the halls of Lake Forest High School is “Moxie”, done by Eleanna Anagnos. This extremely colorful and sprawling art piece is showed off in the commons for all to see on a large scale. Completed in 1998, it might be one of the most well-known paintings at LFHS due to the large amount of students gazing at it as they walk through the commons.
The art work boasted and showed off in the halls is something we should all appreciate and be proud of. If you simply walk through the halls with a spaced out gaze, unobservant, take the time to notice and appreciate the skillful and beautiful artwork all around you.
Mrs. Zare’s painting and art studio classes from the class of 2005 were tasked with using a 12 by 12 canvas to sectionally paint a picture in honor of Mr. Easton. Their inspiration for this piece was Mr. Easton’s multi colored blazer. It is one of the most colorful paintings in the school, and one with a bigger meaning.
