Four year varsity member and senior captain Lily Remus is preparing to continue her soccer career at DePauw University. After being one of the programs most dedicated players and leaders on and off the field, she is excited to continue her career at the next level.
“Lily doesn’t just play soccer, she lives soccer,” said Girls Varsity Coach Ty Stuckslager.
For many players soccer only exists on the field, during practices or games, but not for Lily. Not only did she talk to coaches in her free time, but she follows professional teams and watches film in her free time.
That passion has definitely defined her throughout her years at LFHS. Reflecting on being a four year varsity member, Remus said her experiences helped her grow both as a leader and player.
“It’s a very special opportunity that has allowed me to grow as a player and help lead the team this year,” she said.
Her role further expanded this year as she is one of four varsity captains.
“Being a captain has changed my role on the team in many ways,” Remus said. “I’ve had more responsibility in the team performance and supporting and motivating my teammates through communication and leadership.”
Head varsity coach, Ty Stuckslager, said these qualities made her a natural leader for the team as she consistently demonstrates resilience and passion, this perfectly defines her role as captain.
Outside of the intense pressure that comes with being a captain and a key part of the team, some of her favorite memories is when the team advanced to supersectionals her freshman year.
Coach Ty also praised Remus for her resilience after battling through injuries earlier in the season.
“Her resilience is obvious as she persevered and overcame early season injuries to get where she is today,” Stuckslager said.
That perseverance is part of the advice Remus now shares with younger athletes hoping to reach the varsity level.
Continuing soccer in college was an easy decision for Remus because of the impact the sport has had on her life.
“I’ve played soccer my whole life, so I couldn’t really see myself not having it in my life anymore,” she said. “Having a team environment is so special and I’ve made some lifelong friends through the sport.”
Her favorite part of high school soccer has been the relationships and connections she has built with teammates across all grade levels.
“My favorite part about high school soccer is being able to go to school and see my teammates every day,” Remus said. “I think it creates such a special bond off the field that brings us together on the field.”
As she prepares for the next step in her soccer career at DePauw, Remus leaves behind a great example of resilience, leadership, and commitment, that her teammates and future players can look up to.
