As senior Sarah Halperin is getting ready to take off for college, her impact on the Lake Forest High School community and the influence she’s made on her peers will continue to linger.
Sarah has always been a leader. She is an active participant at LFHS with her involvement in several clubs and extracurriculars.
She’s one of the co-presidents alongside Lincoln Harlow for the Interact club, a club based on volunteering and helping others.
“I wanted to gain leadership experience, and I felt like interact was a good club to be a leader of because it makes me feel fulfilled while giving back to others,” senior Sarah Halperin said.
Sarah’s been committed to Interact club since day one. She’s devoted hundreds of hours within Interact and outside of it into making an impact on people’s lives around her.
“A huge part of leadership is consistent commitment; I’ve described Sarah as a ‘rock’ for the club. You can count on her to be there and follow through,” sponsor Mrs. Cindy Collier said.
Interact club volunteers for a wide range of places in the North Shore. They do anything from filling easter eggs with candy to helping donate groceries for families in need.
“One of my favorite volunteer projects I’ve participated in through Interact club was with SaLT (Service and Learning Together). We packed food to give to local families in Highwood and Highland Park,” Halperin said. “I really enjoyed this because I actually got to see the impact it made on these people.”
Sarah’s leadership doesn’t go unnoticed by her peers.
“Sarah goes way beyond the expectations of being president and always does more,” senior co-president Lincoln Harlow said.
One example of Sarah’s leadership was shown through a service event she planned.
“Sarah reached out to Beacon Place and found out that we could help them by making craft activity bags for their kids to take home over winter break. We made 130 bags and Sarah delivered them herself,” Mrs. Collier said.
Since Sarah was young, she’s participated in volunteer activities at Bernie’s Book Bank, Feed my Starving Children, Fill a Heart 4 Kids, and more.
“Its always something I’ve loved. I think giving back to others and the community is an important thing,” Halperin said.
With Sarah’s dedication and ability to lead by example, she stood out from others when it came to making a decision.
“She set herself apart by showing this commitment to the club even before she had a leadership title,” Mrs. Collier said. “Choosing her as a co-president this year was a ‘no-brainer’ for me as a sponsor.”
As Sarah is getting ready to graduate, the impact of her leadership and commitment will continue to inspire and shape our community.
