The annual Writing Workshop Showcase took place this week on the block days, and students and staff have nothing but great things to say about it.
This year, the showcase was set up outside the RMA Theater, which allowed a lot more people to flow in and out and experience the fun.

“I’m excited for it being on the first floor this year because it has involved a lot more than just English. We’ve had teachers from other departments coming down and giving feedback. We’ve even had some students at the end of the day yesterday want to put a piece in,” said Mrs. Van Skyock.
Mrs. Jennifer Van Skyock and the English Department are the ones who organize this event. Each year, staff put in thought and effort to make the showcase memorable for students. With more room in the RMA hallway this year, there were complementary snacks for students to enjoy and tables lined up for workspace.
The Writing Workshop Showcase is an opportunity for students to share their writing anonymously with the school and receive positive feedback for their creativity.
“What we like more than anything is not just that the kids are reading a lot of different writing with different perspectives, but they can also take the feedback and improve their work,” said English Department Chair Mrs. Kristen Carlson.

For students, they get to enjoy a break from argumentative essays and grammar lessons to read about different experiences and styles of writing amongst their peers at LFHS.
“I always enjoy coming to these showcases,” said junior Bain Flavin. “Not every school gets the opportunity to read stories of other students without them being in the spotlight or displayed with their names in black and white. They do a really great job planning [the showcase].”
Flavin explained his appreciation for the anonymous aspect of the event. Some students also reported feeling more comfortable participating because of the anonymity.
“I think things like this are really important to have a shared experience amongst all students. The English teachers look at it as a chance to celebrate all of our students’ effort,” said Mrs. Van Skyock.
