Are tote bags replacing backpacks, or do they just make a fashion statement? Walking through the halls, it’s impossible to miss bags swinging from shoulders in every style and design. Students are switching from two straps to one, but why? For some students, tote bags are the latest fashion trend. For others, backpacks remain the tried and true school essential.
Once reserved for shopping sprees or beach days, tote bags have found a new role within schools. Lightweight, easy to grab, and stylish, they’re appealing for students who value practicality as well as making a fashion statement. Backpacks, however, continue to dominate with their organized compartments and space, especially for carrying books and a computer.
For students who stick with backpacks, practicality remains the top priority. Senior Aubrey Griffith says she never felt a strong reason to switch.
“I chose a backpack because it’s what I’ve done my whole life and I didn’t really see a point in changing that,” Griffith said.
She also acknowledges that tote bags may work for others, but “At least for me, it wouldn’t be practical because I need more space.”
Tote bag users, however, often describe their choice as a balance between style and function. Senior Bella Bosau states that her decision evolved over time.
“When I first bought the bag, I was excited because it was more aesthetically pleasing than my backpack,” Bosau said. “After using a tote bag for about three years, I’ve felt more organized. It’s easier to find my folders and notebooks, and there are a considerable amount of pockets depending on the brand.”
Still, not all tote users are convinced. Junior Maggie Corbett admits the cons of the tote.
“It’s not practical at all–I think I’m going to go back to a backpack,” said Corbett.
Other students at LFHS point to comfort as the main reason for switching.
“I got a lot of back pain from backpacks, and a tote is more stylish,” said senior Lizzie Rieder.
Some believe tote bags will remain stylish.
“From freshman to senior year, I’ve noticed consistent popularity in tote bags,” said Bosau. “I predict this trend will continue since tote bags are both cute and functional.”
Ultimately, the question of the tote bag takeover comes down to personal preference and school culture. Tote bags offer style, personality, and comfort, while backpacks remain essential for space and practicality. Even as trends shift, individual style and preference is what matters most.
