As fall sports come to a close, many people are left with lots of free time and are unsure of how to fill it. Good thing there are so many places to volunteer around town.
Whether you want to give back to our community, need service hours for NHS, or are looking for things to do, here is your guide to service opportunities in our area.

Fill a Heart for Kids
Fill a Heart for Kids is a non-profit organization located in Lake Forest, right behind the Starbucks in town. Fill a Heart is a place that provides homeless, in need, foster, and at-risk children with the daily necessities and supplies. Volunteering involves packing bags for kids, helping organize, and helping out at events. Fill a Heart for Kids is so welcoming and has the best vibe inside.

Salt
Salt is a service-learning non-profit organization that is run by former teachers who are educating the community. Located in Highland Park, many students from LFHS are active members of Salt. Salt consists of 3 different programs: Love2learn, which focuses on tutoring kids at the Highland Park library, helping with homework. The second is a program called ShopNDrop, which packages food for those who are in need or can’t afford it. The last is TakeCarePackages, which sends cards and gifts to struggling communities. They have previously sent cards and packages to the LA firefighters, Make-A-Wish children on their birthdays, and many more.

Feed My Starving Children
Feed My Starving Children is a popular spot for people in the area when it comes to volunteering. Located in Libertyville, Illinois, FMSC is a non-profit organization that focuses on feeding children around the world who don’t have the proper food supply. While volunteering, you can label, fill, or package food bags. After a box is completed, everyone cheers, and music plays; there is a fun atmosphere while volunteering.

Bernie’s Book Bank
Bernie’s mission is to supply children with books to create a library of their own. They do this to help build literacy skills among children who don’t have the proper needs to build those skills. Bernie’s is also a non-profit organization that welcomes volunteers to sort and package books, located in Lake Bluff, Illinois. With a positive environment inside, you can always leave feeling positive.
