On September 10th, the Young Americans for Freedom Chapter (YAF) at LFHS commemorated the lives that were lost on 9/11 by assembling flags in downtown Market Square. YAF is a student-led organization that promotes students to become bold advocates for freedom.
YAF arranged 2,977 flags to honor the 2,977 fallen individuals who should never be forgotten. The students who participated in this event showed the utmost respect for this important, devastating day in history.
“I appreciated honoring those who suffered from the terrorism as well as those who assisted the victims on the terrible day of September 11th,” said senior Bink Hartline.
Across the country, memorials and monuments are admired while media and narratives are shared to remember the citizens who passed due to the appalling acts that occurred 23 years ago. In our community, these young advocates did their part to show their high regard. Senior Cooper Hender stated how, “It was such a great way to show patriotism towards our community.”
Junior Sophia Brincat is extremely passionate towards YAF and consistently has a positive impact on our community. Brincat stated how “9/11 wasn’t just an attack on the twin towers, it was an attack on all Americans. The lingering effects of 9/11 are still felt by America today.”
Brincat further spoke: “It’s important that we remember those who we lost and recognize the bravery shown that day. Setting up these flags in Market Square is something small we can do to honor the many lives lost on this day in history. ” Brincat organized the event alongside junior Camille Brincat and junior Evelyn Marshall, the YAF leaders. They recently brought the club to LFHS, scheduling frequent meetings and events.
Josie Irvin recalled her surprise while arranging the thousands of flags in Market Square.
“While setting up the flags, it was shocking to see how each flag represented a death. This opened my eyes to how this tragic incident could shift our country,” said Irvin.
On Wednesday, the flags were admired by Lake Forest residents as many reflected on the attacks and are reminded to Never Forget.
