The annual Wellness Walk at LFHS is this Monday. The annual end-of-the-year activity is a school-wide event that allows students and staff to take a well deserved mental break during the last month of busy school days.

“The walk was developed to give everyone a breather and the chance to do something fun,” says Director of Student Services Mr. John Maher.  May is also Mental Health Awareness month.

The students and staff make a loop around the campus and the surrounding neighborhood to get active and be outside.

All school members get a special shirt for the walk, and seniors get their own color to commemorate their upcoming graduation. Seniors receive a clap out as well, which is similar to the clap in received by incoming freshmen.

The event was started in 2010. “The walk was every other year at the start, because it was such an undertaking,” said Maher.

The positive response helped to secure the event a spot on the calendar every May, starting in 2016.

“There was recognition that we needed to take a minute and let our students focus on emotional wellness and slow it down during a very stressful time of year,” says Ms. Ashleigh Malec, Director of Student Activities .

Despite the walk being rained on two separate days one year, and another getting canceled during the Covid pandemic, it has proved to be a strong event that the community looks forward to.

Once the walk is completed, students still have the opportunity to engage with activities that promote wellness. There is a continued break from class, food, and a chance to just breathe.

Mr. Maher hopes that students will have fun being outside with their friends, eating food,  listening to music, and being active.
