Big nights from Thomas and Aberle help Scouts take down Warren Blue Devils

On Tuesday night the Scouts took on the Warren Blue Devils in a North Suburban Conference game. Lake Forest was without junior forward Bolurin Taiwo who has played a heavy role in the Scouts offense. Even though they were without Bolurin  Taiwo, the Scouts were able to cruise past the Blue Devils and win by 15, 73-58.

The Scouts got off to a great start, which was fueled by junior Tommie Aberle. The zone defense was giving Warren some troubles early as the Scouts were jumping to the ball and flying around the court. The energy on defense caused early turnovers and gave the Scouts the opportunity to get out and run in transition. After scoring runs by Aberle and a quick run by senior guard Noah Portalatin, senior and Clemson commit Asa Thomas caught fire. The Scouts were able to take a 20-11 lead at the end of the first  quarter.

Lake Forest and Warren both added 14 points in the second quarter to send the game to halftime with the Scouts leading 34-25. The highlight of the second quarter was when Thomas hit a three pointer from the LF logo near half court. The Scouts really pulled  away from the Blue Devils in the third quarter, when Asa Thomas heated back up.

“We were able to have good ball movement, which allowed us to find Tommie and Asa  for open shots in the rhythm and flow of the offense,” said senior Noah Portalatin.

At the same time Asa Thomas was having his highest scoring game of the season, so was Tommie Aberle who was finding different ways to get open underneath the basket. While Warren had height with their big men, the Scouts zone defense was making it hard for the Blue Devils to get the ball down low.  At the end of the third quarter, the  Scouts had a comfortable lead of 20 up 56-36.

Midway through the fourth quarter Coach LaScala rotated out his starters after seeing that the game was out of reach for the Blue Devils. Asa Thomas finished with 32 points and 10 rebounds and Tommie Aberle finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Senior  Noah Portalatin added 12 points.

Lake Forest improved to 8-8 (2-3 in conference) on the year. They are looking for a road conference win against Mundelein on Thursday, 1/12 at 7:00 as they look to get back above .500 on the year.
