Senior wrestler reflects on commitments to athletics

When he isn’t in the wood shop working on tables, Adirondack chairs, electric guitars, and various smaller box and spoon projects, Colin Burton is busy wrestling, playing baseball, and playing football.

With all of these extracurricular activities, surely Colin has had an impact on people through his sports experience, but beyond that, Colin is a person who almost every single teacher, aid, administrator, and student knows by name. It may be cliche, but Colin is the kind of person to always support you, and when he isn’t competing in one of his many sports, Colin is the kind of person to show up and support his fellow students in all sports ranging from girls badminton to boys soccer games.

“I’ve never had a negative interaction with Colin,” Ryan Meneely said, really showing the extent that Colin cares about everybody that he sees on a daily basis, and just showing his overall generally positive attitude and demeanor.

With playing sports, Colin has now spent 4 years with football, 4 with wrestling, and he is coming up on 4 with baseball this spring. “Coming into high school I had wrestled and played baseball before but I wanted to get involved with other sports as well, so I trained in the offseason and did the football summer camp to get me ready for freshman year,” Colin said.

After an intense freshman and sophomore season playing as a lineman, Colin changed football positions, explaining that his size made it difficult as a lineman and that a position change would be in order for him to make the varsity team. Junior year he worked hard to gain speed and made the roster, but had some issues with the plays, and then senior year he got through it and was mature enough to focus and ended up with a block and then an interception on the very next play.

Another extracurricular activity that has defined Colin and helped him grow was wrestling.

“Wrestling is such a different experience than football, I feel good and feel like I am in shape for football, and then I show up on the first days of wrestling, and I am nowhere near the right spot.”He said, explaining the true level of conditioning it takes to be a wrestler. “The conditioning was a pain, especially in my first two years of wrestling, but once I realized it was all mindset last year and coming into this year, I had a great season last year and am bringing that momentum into school.” Colins attitude that he took into the past season and this current season became infectious among his teammates, and helped build culture, confidence, and energy with the young team.

Colin, who has also played baseball for 3 years, has had a serious impact on his teammates as well.

“Burton always had a positive attitude. When times were tough he always showed his compassion for his teammates,” senior baseball player Shep Graf said, explaining Colin’s constant and infectious happiness both on and off the diamond.

Almost everybody knows Colin in one way or another, and Colin has grown and matured immensely in high school, through sports, classes, and relationships, all to make him who he is and help him create the impact that he has on us every day.
