Spring travel baseball is detrimental for high school players

Travel Baseball has come a long way through the years. There are some major benefits to playing travel baseball. Over my last summer I had the chance to travel all across the Midwest to compete against some of the top competition in the Midwest. As Perfect Game and PBR (Prep Baseball Report) hold these top tournaments, they get a great show out with college coaches going to recruit players. With the number of teams coming out to play in these tournaments, the best teams continue to play each other throughout the summer at different tournaments. As the teams start to weed themselves out the coaches start to follow those teams. This is a very effective way to recruit and to get a crowd out to tournaments. This works well and it creates an awesome time in the summer.

Perfect Game has now announced that they are going to be holding spring tournaments instead of teams playing in their high school league. Perfect Game has announced that their first tournament is going to be held on March 25th. They are offering that they will have the option to play 2, 7 inning games and a 9-inning game on Saturday. They are also offering a one-day tournament on the 29th or 30th of March. During the one day they will have the chance to play five games in one day. They are also promoting that college scouts will attend these tournaments. Whether teams decide to play in these tournaments is their decision.

I personally do not think that teams should play in these tournaments because they will be missing out on a lot of things high school baseball has to offer. High school baseball is very different from summer baseball. During summer baseball there is a different feeling playing for your high school. You are wearing a jersey that has history to it. You are in school with your teammates every day. Being on a high school team brings you close to a lot of people you normally would never cross paths with. For away games you are ride the bus with your teammates killing time on the ride there and are having fun on the ride back if you win. High school baseball is an experience that you know is going to end one day and you dread that day. There is no reason why kids should be missing out to go play tournaments where you have to pay money to enter and have to stay in a hotel. Every kid should play high school baseball.
