A preview of intramural basketball

As winter rolls around the corner, we realize it’s finally that time of the year. Classic Intramural basketball is back for a new season with several new faces. After everyone has scrambled for teams, everything is locked in and official.

Intramural is a 7 week long series of Sunday afternoon games against other teams in the league. Anyone can enter, and you have free range to come up with a team name, roster, coach, captains, and sometimes even team managers. You do not need much skill to be a part of Intramural Basketball; it includes all levels of basketball players.

Unfortunately, if you are on a winter sports team, you cannot participate in the league, but most teams try to recruit current basketball players to be their coaches.

The word has spread about the amusement of the upcoming season. There are “32 teams rostered, 22 men’s teams and 10 girls/coed teams which is up from 28 last year,” said Intramural Coordinator Mr. Ray Werner.

Returners are ready to show everyone how it’s done on the court.

Senior Annie Swift from team BALLERZ said, “I love intramural, it’s so fun to have all your friends on a team and also play against them.”

All teams were submitted by captains by Friday, December 2nd so unfortunately, the time slot is up, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go and enjoy a few fun games. Werner expresses an important announcement that all captains have a meeting on Thursday, December 8, from 3:30- 4:00 PM, in room 79 to organize the logistics for the upcoming season.

Although, in the end, Intramural is for fun, teams are getting amped up and competitive as the season approaches. Instagrams for teams are starting to appear revealing rosters, and  you can hear smack talk within the halls.

“A fun part of the league is everyone just wants to come out and play, they enjoy bragging rights and being able to play against their buddies,” said Werner.

Junior Murphy Moorhead from team Garrigan’s St. Antelopes is confident in his team’s abilities for their return this season. “ I am most excited for our team and our goals. We’re gonna make a big splash at this year’s intramural league. Should be able to take it home, a lot of competition in the league this year,  no one’s gonna stand a chance against us though,” said Moorhead.

There are going to be a lot of new teams out on the courts this year. Some underclassmen are ambitious to get the season started and prove their skills but also join in on the fun.

“I am so excited to play one sport with all my friends! I think it will be so funny, and playing against other teams we know will be even more entertaining,” said sophomore Michaela Barry.

Werner highlights a few teams that are ready to come back with a bang, “Riley Hoskins is pretty fired up for this season; the Ballers are back again and they’re looking for some revenge.”

The future season looks competitive and entertaining so clear your schedules for all Sundays in January, folks, because the intramural season is back!
