The Varsity Baseball team had a hot start to their season, going 3-0 in St. Louis over Spring Break, before losing their conference opener to Stevenson Monday.

“The three games in St Louis felt great. Our bags were on fire and with a combined great pitching and great fielding on defense, we were unstoppable,” senior Will Baughman said.

The team finished with 10 or more runs and 10 or more hits in each of its first three games, according to senior Mattie Gapinski.

The bats that were hot in Missouri cooled off a bit in the 11-3 loss Monday. The team will look to get revenge in a rematch against Stevenson today. Senior Mikey Gray will take the mound for the Scouts.

“As of right now, our strength is in our lineup. We have a great nine guys who can flat out hit,” senior Cade Nowik said.

Nowik said the team is working on depth in pitching, but “it’s still early.”

Coach Ray Del Fava hopes the team’s “great bonding” during the successful trip to St. Louis helps the team achieve their goals of “competing for championships whether that is in the conference or the state series.”

Del Fava pointed to returning players Nowik (Denison commit), Leo Anderson (Johns Hopkins commit), Tristan Kerr (Benedictine commit), Gray (Denison commit), Gianni Royer, Shep Graf, and Tommie Aberle as core members of the team.

“This group should set the tone for the rest of the season,” he said.

Both Nowik and Baughman pointed to the team’s work ethic as a strength.

“Our team has a lot of energy. We bring our best to every game and work hard during practice and during all seven innings of game time,” Baughman said.
