Historically, the LFHS tennis teams have always been successful. As the Boys’ Varsity Tennis team prepares for tryouts in mid March 2019, they are prepared to serve up another great spring season.

Last year, Coach Leighton, Head Boys Varsity Tennis coach since 2000, trained the team to the top. Coach Leighton has been a National Junior Competition coach for 35 years, and was honored in 2017 as he was inducted into the Illinois High School Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame for his success. With his knowledge of the team and expertise on the sport, the Scouts are ready to make their way to the top once again. The 2018 team placed ninth with ten points at the 2018 IHSA Boys Tennis State Finals. Led by Leighton and the varsity captains, William Zordani and Oleksyi Vyshyvanyuk, the boys are confident their performance will hit new peaks at the IHSA State Finals.

The Scouts look forward to a number of competitive matches. Their first match of the season will be played on April 9, 2019. Throughout this spring, the boys will play against teams across the state such as New Trier, Stevenson, Libertyville, Lake Forest Academy, Deerfield, etc. Their toughest matches will come from rival Stevenson. However, The Scouts are prepared to ace the Patriots in both singles and doubles this season.

This year’s starting lineup is composed of mostly varsity veterans. Players to look out for are Zordani, Oleksyi, Vyshyvanyuk, and Vishvam Bhagat as they are all returning state qualifier members of the LFHS tennis team.

In order to achieve their goals, the team practices diligently and works relentlessly at practices. Most of the returning varsity players have been practicing all winter to prepare and bring their best to the court in the spring. Practices this spring are much anticipated as the team has just gotten new courts at West Campus. They have learned that even though tennis is an individual sport, they work together to bring the Scouts to victory. Varsity Captain William Zordani explains, “Our short season will be action packed and filled with lots of matches on the road. We hope to see many Scouts at one of our four home matches!”

Even with all of their success, LFHS Boys’ Varsity Tennis is most excited to host their annual charity tennis clinic to benefit a different organization each year. This event is planned by the varsity captains and one elected junior on varsity. Stay tuned for more information on this event as the season gets closer!

Make sure to support the LFHS Scouts as the spring season quickly approaches! The match schedule will be posted on the LFHS website. Go Scouts!
