This week’s Sneak of the Week goes to junior Michael Pasquella’s Nike sneaker. Michael is wearing the Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG sneaker. The shoe has been updated with some new signature hoop details but has the same plush feel and lightweight fit that has made the Air Jordans famous. Michael is wearing his Jordans with his H&M brown khakis.
The Air Jordans debut started in 1985 by Peter Moore, who designed the first Air Jordan shoe. Michael Jordan signed a five-year endorsement deal with Nike, reportedly worth $2.5 million when he hadn’t yet proven himself on the professional level in the NBA. The NBA banned the original Air Jordan for not meeting the league’s policy on uniforms and colors. Michael Jordan wore them anyway and faced a $5,000 per-game fine. However, after their initial success, Nike happily paid the fine. As a result, the shoe made a unique marketing opportunity for the shoe. MJ rocked them all the way to his Rookie of the Year honor that same year. Their Air Jordan was the only shoe to feature the Nike Swoosh logo.
This iconic shoe that Michael Pasquella is wearing has been the “sneaker” to be worn shooting hoops or walking around the streets since ‘85. Today, Jordans are still a classic and being labeled as popular is an understatement for the Nike brand. It is one of Nike’s staple shoes and it will never be forgotten. Go get some Js and and strut the iconic look through the halls of LFHS.
