Senior Maria Alzamora,  known around Lake Forest High School for her kindness, school spirit, and infectious enthusiasm, is celebrating an exciting new chapter. Maria has officially committed to Auburn University’s Eagles Program, a highly selective four-year program designed for students with intellectual disabilities.

If you ask Maria to describe herself, she does so with confidence and warmth.

I think I am kind, outgoing, and a good friend to others,” Maria said.

Her interests reflect the same energy: she loves music, attending concerts, traveling with her family, and staying active through sports. At LFHS, Maria plays basketball for the Special Olympics, cheers on the sidelines as a member of the cheer team, and participates in horseback riding. All of these activities showcase her dedication, teamwork, and love for being involved.

Maria first discovered Auburn in September when she and her mom attended an open house for the Eagles Program on campus.

“I loved the school and the program, so I applied,” Maria said.

From that moment on, Auburn stood out as the place where she could best see herself thriving. When Maria learned she had been accepted, the moment was emotional and affirming. She explained that she was “really excited and proud” of herself–– and for good reason. Out of 26 students invited to participate in the program’s in-person interview process, only 10 were selected for the upcoming class.

For Maria, committing to Auburn represents much more than just college acceptance.

“It means I get to have a college experience like my brother, Bobby, and my friends at school,” Maria said.

The opportunity to live on campus, take classes, and fully immerse herself in college life is something she has long looked forward to. At Auburn, Maria is most excited for her classes, meeting new friends, rushing a sorority, and cheering on the Tigers at football games. As a member of the Eagles program, she will live in a dorm with a roommate who is also enrolled in the program. She will take classes focused on building independent living and career skills after graduation.

Throughout the application process, Maria credits her parents as her biggest supporters, along with several teachers who guided her along the way. She specifically thanked Mrs. Lovitsch, Dr. Sassen, and Mrs. Bielski for all of their help as well as encouragement.

With her positivity and determination, Maria is more than ready for what lies ahead. LFHS couldn’t be prouder to see her take this next step, and Auburn is truly lucky to have her.
