New Advocacy in Medicine club educates on medical careers

Advocacy in Medicine is one of the newer clubs to join LFHS’ long list of extracurricular activities for students. With so many students interested in medicine and going pre-med into college, this club allows students to learn about medical professions before leaving high school.

AIM started in Nov. 2022 by sophomore Kosta Kapsalis who hopes to pursue a career in medicine after college. When Kapsalis wasn’t able to find an activity where he could learn about medical professions, he decided to start his own.

One of his favorite meetings they have hosted was when a neurosurgeon talked to the group about his work.

Kapsalis finds physicians, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to share their experiences with the club all in hopes of growing students’ interests.

One of the school nurses, Ms. Destiny Sadoski, helps run the club, and her goal is to “give students as much information about the healthcare field as she can.”

If a student wants to learn about a certain job, they can even talk to Kapsalis and Ms. Sadoski about finding someone with that profession to come talk to the club. Students can essentially customize their learning experience from the club by requesting a certain career in order to enhance their knowledge of that profession.

After every presentation from a speaker, there’s a Q&A where all students are welcome to ask any questions they might have from the presentation or just a general career question.

In the future, AIM wants to expand the club so that underprivileged schools can join the meetings virtually and also learn about potential career options.

“If you’re interested [in medicine] at all or if that’s something you want to do after college, come and sit down–you can learn something,” Kapsalis said.
