What makes a jazzy, fun, talented group of performers even better? Feminism. This year, musical group The Band Women prepare to take the LFHS Talent show stage. But what makes them so special? They’re not just band girls, but band women.

“We’re a little bit more sophisticated, a bit more elegant,” said junior Maria Kyriacou.

The group is composed of five musicians, mainly led by the three juniors. Junior Maria Kyriacou will be on trumpet, junior Avery Morris on tenor saxophone, and junior Meghan Pierce on alto saxophone. Accompanying them will be senior Nikki Singh on piano, and freshman Fleury Robbins on drums. They are still looking for a bassist, and they encourage any female players to reach out.

The Band Women already showed their talent at TEDx last year, performing a Mamma Mia medley, and this year they’re ready to take their talent to the big stage. Performing Billie Jean by Michael Jackson, they aim to bring the 80s pizzazz of the song to their performance.

“Our aim is to make it as fun and enjoyable to watch as possible,” said Kyriacou. “We’re planning to dance around, look silly, but also bring the energy.”

Inspired by the Band Boys, who performed at Talent Show 2022, the ladies decided to form their own group as a counterpart to them.

“We admire what they did last year, and wanted to bring that same energy and hype to 2023.” said Kyriacou. They are ready to bring not only incredible music, but fun to this year as well.

“I’m really excited to perform with some of my best friends,” said junior Meghan Pierce. “I can’t  wait to show people how powerful females can be in a male-dominated field like music performance!”

The Band Women are not only an energetic group, but an inspirational one.

“For some [girls] in the audience, they look up to us and think, ‘I could play the trumpet, I could play the saxophone,’ which are more male dominated instruments.” said Kyriacou.

The Band Women will perform live on stage at Talent Show on Feb.23-25 at 7pm in the RMA.
