Your very own classmates at Lake Forest High School have cast a new line in student life. Lake Forest Fly Fishing Club teaches students the importance of getting outdoors, learning the art of fly fishing, and appreciating the prestigious challenges it offers.
Founders Graydon Rother, Thatcher Rother, and Quinn Donovan have brought this new club to LFHS this past fall to share their love for fly fishing. After traveling around the West—Yellowstone National Park, Montana, and Wyoming— they have grown a love for the sport. They are now thrilled to keep building that same energy around our own community.
“The instructors of LF Fly all share a love for fly fishing,” said founder Graydon Rother.
“The two things we wanted to pursue most were to expand the love for fly fishing over the community, and to gain a deeper understanding of local fishing opportunities.”
LF Fly Club is open to everyone—whether you have been fishing for years, or are brand new to the sport, LF Fly is generous to all levels of skill.
“The instructors are able to break everything down in a really understandable way. I was able to get things down pretty fast, making our trip to Wisconsin super fun and educational,” said senior Tommy Demetrio.
With LF Fly, students begin by learning the craft— casting techniques, tying knots, and fly selection. The instructors get you out on the water, and you practice skills at local streams and lakes. The club has taken trips to Wisconsin over the past couple of weeks, where members hone in on their skills and put them to the test, giving them the opportunity to work as a team and learn new things.
One of the main values of LF Fly is protecting the environment, and participating in conservation efforts that help protect local waters is a frequent practice with LF Fly. LF Fly wants you to build connections with others, share stories, make new friendships, and spend time outdoors.
As the word of LF Fly Fishing Club continues to grow, its founders hope to influence more people to join them as they get outdoors and experience the benefits that fly fishing offers. Don’t hesitate to try something new—LF Fly is the place to start.
