LFHS students showed their dedication to giving back, turning an ordinary school day into one of community impact

The LF Gives: All Scout Service Day is an event that Ashleigh Malec began hosting last year, which gives students the opportunity to make a difference right on campus. This event gives the students the opportunity to get involved in service projects during their lunch or study hall periods. Activities include food sorting and labeling food bags for the Great Full Market event at Beacon Place, creating pipe cleaner flower as well as writing letters to veterans at the Lovell Federal Health Care Center, knitting hearts and coloring breakfast tags for Fill a Heart, and making dog toys for Orphans of the Storm.

These volunteer opportunities give students a chance to use their talents to give back to the community and a chance to earn service hours. Ashleigh Malec plans the event each year and has discovered that standardized testing day is the perfect opportunity for students to give their time.

“This works well during a testing day when students are absent because it is difficult for teachers to continue new material if only part of their class is present,” said Malec. “The biggest takeaway I hope students realize is the positive impact they can make by giving their time and talents.”

When signing up, students were given the options to volunteer individually or as a class, and then they were each assigned a role. Classes filled the hallways on the first floor preparing care packages and making blankets.

“I went with my personal finance class and it was so cool to see all the different organizations that we were able to get involved with in order to help those in need,” said senior Ella Nanini.

Since last year, the event has grown exponentially and provided even more support to local organizations. Throughout the school day, students eagerly joined the service activities, filling the hallways with energy and a shared sense of purpose. Students worked together to meet and surpass their service goals.

“I think the amount of volunteers and organizations grew immensely from last year. Participation was also awesome. During every period of the day all of the stations were filled. It was really convenient that we got to go volunteer during our classes and it made it much easier to participate,” said Senior Tess Uihlein.

Overall, the event was a success and LFHS is already excited for next year’s All Scout Service Day!
