Whether you see him in the halls or in the lunchroom with the deans, almost every student knows Officer Mark Long.
Officer Long has served as the LFHS Student Resource Officer (SRO) for the past five years. Students recently learned that the SRO position will be rotated, giving other officers the chance to try for this so-sought-after job next year.
The position as an SRO is important because it allows officers to interact with students. Many students attest to Officer Long’s authentic kindness, interest in helping others, and his effort to build relationships with students, staff, and teachers—which is why so many people on campus love to have him as our SRO.
“Officer Long was so kind to give the independent living class a tour of the police station and explain everything the police department does for our community,” senior Molly Thomas said. “The fact that he took time out of his day to help out a small class truly shows his generosity and character.”
Officer Long expresses the love and gratitude he feels for his job, explaining which aspects of his daily work he most appreciates.
“I enjoy creating relationships with students the most, and speaking as a guest in the classroom. Being an SRO officer is such a fun and rewarding position,” Officer Long said.
Officer Long has truly touched many people so positively during his time as the SRO, including many teachers who have built trust and personal relationships with him. Throughout campus, there is a collective sadness among staff and students about losing Officer Long as our school’s SRO. One of those teachers includes his close colleague, Dean of Students Mrs. Laura Clegg.
“We will miss the camaraderie with Officer Long; he has been around for 5 years, and is truly a part of our family,” said Mrs. Clegg. “Not only do I enjoy working with him, but I feel safe around him.”
Officer Long has built a reputation for successfully making all school officials and students feel safe in the school. His ability to balance authority with connection does not go unnoticed.
“I will miss his demeanor with kids and students; he understands that when he is in the school, he is a school officer, and understands that he is working with high school students,” Assistant Principal Mr. Frank Lesniak said.
Officer Long has made a lasting and profound impact on the school, and next year, he truly will be missed by everyone.
