As the beginning of the school year unravels, and we start to settle into our routines, it’s easy to recognize that fall is quickly approaching. The start of a new school year can often feel stressful, so here are my top five fall activities that ensure relaxation and get you ready fall!

Apple picking:
Apple picking is a versatile activity and is something you can enjoy year round, however, it’s know that apple picking during the fall is especially memorable. In the Midwest between the months of September and October, most apple varieties reach their peak ripening. Apple picking is great to do with anyone. It’s a tradition that fosters memories and creates a sense of togetherness. Orchards are typically surrounded by trees full of freshly orange and yellow leaves and golden sunlight- all elements of a traditional fall setting. Heinz Orchard in Green Oaks, just 15 minutes away, and is the perfect place to visit this season.

Visiting a pumpkin patch:
Similar to apple picking, visiting a pumpkin patch is simply a must-do activity in the fall. Pumpkin patches are a tradition best enjoyed with family and friends. You get to pick out a pumpkin for carving or baking and enjoy each other’s presence. Pumpkin patches typically offer a plethora of other activities as well. There are a hand full of farms close to Lake Forest, allowing for a diverse selection of activity. Usually, you can expect to see activities such as hay rides and corn mazes. Offering such a wide array of activities, pumpkin patches are undeniably an essential part of enjoying fall.

Baking:
No matter your skill level, baking can be an enjoyable activity. A busy school schedule can foster a stressful environment, but baking is a stress-free activity that allows you to relax as you distract yourself with measuring and mixing. Baking with friends and family can be an excellent bonding experience, as you get to create memories with one another.

Hiking at local forest preserves:
Getting away from stuffy air and grounding yourself in nature can act as an instant relief. Whether hiking alone or with a friend, the quiet found in nature is unlike anything elsewhere. It creates a serene environment, which allows for clearer thinking. During the fall, multicolored leaves create a stunning scene to explore. Exercise increases dopamine levels in the brain, improves memory and learning, as well as enhances attention and concentration. Hiking, or even a simple brisk walk, is a non-negotiable if you’re wanting to relax during a stressful start to the school year.

Pumpkin carving:
When asked to think of a popular fall activity, pumpkin carving often comes first to mind, and for good reason. Pumpkin carving is a seasonal tradition and it just makes fall more festive. Carving is a good way to relax as well as connect with friends. It’s a hands on activity that can give you a break from school. In the end, you are left with the perfect decoration you created yourself.
