The Chicago Bears brought in eight new players to their roster last weekend during the 2025 NFL Draft. Some of their key acquisitions to the team include TE Colston Loveland, WR Luther Burden III, and OT Ozzy trapilo. It’s still too early to fully evaluate GM Ryan Pole’s draft class before they’ve played a game, so I’m going to take a deeper look into the top three picks.
Colston Loveland, TE, Michigan (Round 1, Pick 10)
This was a very controversial pick in Chicago. Many fans wanted to see them get Tyler Warren with the 10th pick as he was the highest rated tight end in the draft. Although, I think Colston Loveland was a very solid pick. Loveland is an extremely talented route runner for his size and a very strong blocker. He was able to line up inside and outside, and beat cornerbacks off the line of scrimmage. Ben Johnson was also the tight end’s coach last year for Detroit, developing one of the league’s most talented tight ends, Sam Laporta. Many analysts even have Laporta as Loveland’s player comparison.
“I’m not mad about the pick itself. I think Colston Loveland is a good player and can work really well in whatever scheme Johnson is cooking up. But I am more disappointed that we didn’t take a player like Jalon Walker who would improve our run defense significantly, which is a spot of need for the Bears,” said senior Nate Borland.
Ultimately, the Bears are going all in on Colston Loveland’s high talent and versatility to become a key piece to their offense this year.
Luther Burden III, WR, Missouri (Round 2, Pick 39)
This was a huge fan favorite pick amongst LFHS students. Many kids have known about Luther Burden since he was a senior in high school dominating at East St. Louis Senior High School. Analysts thought Burden would be a mid-to-late first round pick just a few weeks ago. With a lackluster junior year from Burden, he still went early second round, ready to prove why he’s a top rookie receiver.
“I love the pick. He’s got great hands and he’s super shifty. Him being from East St. Louis makes me like the pick more,” said senior Matthew Chabraja.
I am very excited to see what Burden can do in Chicago, and he will definitely be fun to watch.
Ozzy Trapilo, OT, Boston College (Round 2, Pick 56)
The Bears continued to build in the trenches by adding offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo. Standing at six-foot-eight and 310 pounds, Trapilo has the ideal build to develop into a reliable tackle for the Bears. I personally like this pick. Chicago definitely had their offensive line issues last year having Caleb Williams sacked more than any other QB in the league. While some fans may have preferred a skilled position here, the Bears front office and coaching regime clearly have the intention of strengthening the offense and protecting Caleb Williams.
“I’m glad they decided to draft a lineman here. I would’ve liked to get Kelvin Banks in the first round, but I’m still satisfied with Ozzy Trapilo. I bet in a year or two he’ll be an animal,” said senior Thomas Upfold.
Overall, I feel like Trapilo is a good third pick for the Bears because of his ability to be a long term solution to the Bears offensive line struggles.
