Throughout the year, Science Olympiad junior Captains Emmie Brown and Matthew Kim have participated in rigorous academic interscholastic competitions to showcase their knowledge. After winning three medals, they are now qualified to compete at the state level.

Brown has very optimistic goals for this challenging weekend ahead of her, “hoping to place in at least one of [her] three events at state.” Her main goal is to perform to her best ability, work collaboratively, and hopefully walk away with a result that reflects both her and Kim’s efforts this season.

At the state level especially, the competitions become very challenging. However, with all of Brown and Kim’s preparations so far this season, they are both feeling confident and composed.

Kim and Brown have always had an interest and prominent skill in everything science-related. Since they both see themselves pursuing careers in STEM, Science Olympiad was the perfect opportunity to take in order to elevate their abilities.

“Science Olympiad allows us to apply the knowledge we’ve accumulated throughout high school in a rigorous and competitive way. The club itself is super fun and rewarding, as you often get to study topics not covered in typical curricula. In that way, it’s kind of like a science class of its own,” Kim said.

Although still busy with this season, Kim and Brown have been working on big goals for next year. They have high hopes to increase the size of their team as with more people, they are able to compete in more events and rack up more points.

“Next season, we aim to qualify for team state, which was not possible this year with so few people on the team. If we do manage to qualify for team state, there is an opportunity to compete nationally, which is not offered at the individual level,” Brown said.

Since everyone at LFHS has taken science classes, there is an event for everybody.

“Science Olympiad fosters a collaborative environment that prioritizes a joint effort between teammates. Each member has a unique set of skills that can benefit everyone,” Kim said. “Although it may seem challenging, Science Olympiad has actually been really enjoyable. Since there is no pressure of earning a grade, the competitions are relatively stress-free. Also, you never have to worry about being on your own at a competition.”

LFHS science teacher and Science Olympiad Coach Lena Kopecky has seen Brown and Kim through it all.

“Fueled by determination and hours of preparation, Matthew and Emmie have earned their place at the Illinois Individual Science Olympiad State Tournament where they will compete in a wide variety of science topics, including Anatomy, Physiology, Ecology, and Chemistry. Shout-out to these future scientists for their incredible achievement,” Kopecky said.
