I’m driving down Sheridan road and have to come to a quick stop at the stop light to let some college students cross— an annoying yet repetitive experience most LFHS students have to deal with. Even though I drive past Lake Forest College (LFC) regularly, it’s that same daily occurrence that reminds me of how we have a college in our town.
However, we don’t take advantage of having a college in our town. Sure, some students utilize the library during finals week, play hockey games in the rink, or are members at the Lake Forest College Recreation Center, but I think LFHS students should be even more involved within the college.
In the fall of 2023, some of LFC’s football team came and watched the Girls Field Hockey team compete against Glenbrook South. Their cheering and support brought tons of energy to the game, and it was clear the football players made a huge impact.
“During our field hockey state semifinal game, over 25 football players from LFC came to offer their support in our state run. Having students not only from LFHS, but also college students from across the country cheering us on, made the game experience even more meaningful,” Girls Field Hockey Coach Cat Catanzaro said.
In my opinion, it’s only fair that LFHS students do the same. When our football season comes to an unfortunate end and Friday nights don’t feel the same, students should go and watch the college compete in their playoffs.
“I think that it is great when LFHS students come to our games and get to see what Division III sports are like. Our game environments have a lot of energy to them. Additionally, we have had numerous LFHS students who want to work in various aspects of the sport, like coaching, being agents, broadcasting, video editing, doing graphic design, and more. I recommend doing internships with us and getting exposed to highly competitive college environments,” LFC’s Head football Coach Jim Catanzaro said.
LFC offers plenty of opportunities for high school students to engage in collegiate level activities. These opportunities are a great way to be more involved in your community and get a feel for the smaller college life.
So, the next time you drive past the college or have an extra hour or two in your day, stop by the LFC and give them your support!
