When it comes to following trends, LFHS students are on their A game. From flare leggings, to adidas sambas, to claw clips, we are constantly throwing our money at what we are told is “trendy.”
In 2022, Chelsea Parke launched what would soon become an internet sensation. A clothing brand featuring jeans, denim jackets, basic tanks, and the infamous Parke Varsity Mockneck.
Although the brand has been active for the last three years, it has only recently blown up online and made its way into every closet in Lake Forest, including mine.
But, what’s all the fuss about?
Parke quite literally took her name, plastered it onto a $30 Amazon Sweatshirt, and sold it for almost four times the amount, and we all fell for it.
I will admit, the oversized look satisfies both comfort and a flattering appearance, but can $125 for a sweatshirt really be justified?
After purchasing not one, but two of Parke’s sweatshirts, I felt some self reflecting needed to be done. Should I be a little more aware of my spending?
As a high school student preparing for graduation, I’m obligated to start thinking about my future, and one major aspect of that is learning how to support myself financially. Although it may not be a worry now, it is essential that I get into the habit of saving money and gain financial perspective.
On the flip side, maybe it is worth investing in an item that I consider to “live in” as I am constantly finding myself pulling it off the hanger and wearing it to school, running errands, or relaxing in my bed.
Senior Kayla Badger recently won one of Parke’s seasonal giveaways and was rewarded a free sweatshirt.
“I actually started crying when I found out, but more because it’s so rare to win those giveaways,” said Badger. “Those sweatshirts are so expensive though, so I was really excited to get one for free.”
Although I can understand the importance of a personal “splurge” from time to time, I encourage more high school students to reflect on their spending habits in order to be more financially responsible in the future.
