It’s no secret that the furniture at LFHS isn’t the best— it’s outdated and not exactly the most comfortable. However, with the $100 million referendum, the school is putting a portion of the funds towards new furniture.
As a part of the process, LFHS has been able to test out some new furniture that are on display in rooms 51, 52, 53, 217, and 219. The district has asked for input from teachers and I have had the chance to test out some of the furniture myself. After much evaluation, I put together a list of the hits and the misses.
Hits
The “Strive Cafe Stool” is a tall chair. The support was evenly distributed and was really comfy overall. The railing towards the bottom was a nice touch to support my feet, and the elevation was a really nice factor. The navy blue body with the silver legs was a nice and simple color combo and I can see it blending in nicely with the other classroom furniture.
The “Wedge Ottoman” was one that I didn’t expect to like – but I did! It’s super small, which makes it really easy to move around, and it’s also surprisingly well cushioned— something that wasn’t the case for some of the other pieces. Overall, it’s a simple yet a functional cushion that does its job to say the least.
Coming in last, but definitely not least for the hits, is the “Rok Otto.” This is a fun piece of furniture as it rocks in all directions and will help students focus thanks to this mechanism. It’s fun, but also comfy with a cushion base which is a good height off the ground. The Rok Otto was my favorite piece as it was the only one I tested with a fun twist to it. I was also a big fan of the color and liked the striped pattern made from the material.
Misses
The “Armless Curved Corner” was not the best piece. The little sitting room was really awkward and there was not a lot of support under the leg area. The colors are bland and the shape is awkward. I can’t see this being something that someone would want to sit on but it could just be for decoration. However, the back rest was nice and it was pretty cushiony.
The “Ruckus Four-Leg Chair” was another chair that didn’t quite do it for me. The triangular shape was really weird and my legs were forced to be pointing outwards. The back rest was not the best as it wasn’t snug and sat too low to offer proper support. I did enjoy how large the base was and it did support my lower body pretty well. The white body looked weird with the blue legs and the overall shape is not good-looking.
Getting new furniture is really exciting and students have a lot to look forward to. Options like the Strive Cafe Stool and the Rok Otto bringing both comfort and practicality, the future of LFHS seating is looking up—just as long as they leave behind the awkward corner chairs.
