As signing up for next year’s classes approaches for LFHS students, you sort through all the possibilities for both English classes and electives. You may be looking for classes that are meaningful to you but also have a lasting impact on your future education.
One class that stands out to be both enjoyable and enriching is Creative Writing.
Junior year, I was going through my options for an English class for my senior year. One that immediately caught my attention was Creative Writing. None of the other classes really struck my interest as much as this one did.
I figured I could be creative on my own, making my own ideas and creating characters for the fictional stories I would be writing. I took this class during my first semester of my senior year and often found myself looking forward to it. It was calming to sit down and write my own stories.
Unlike many other English classes, Creative Writing doesn’t offer many tests or quizzes. Instead, you’re assessed on the growth of your writing skills and workshops. Rather than reading and analyzing stories from other authors, you’re the author of your own story.
Aside from being a senior English class, both juniors and seniors can take it as an elective, while also offering honors credit.
“I love seeing how much students improve as storytellers over the course of one semester if they’re putting their energy into the craft of writing,” Creative Writing teacher Mrs. Hersam said. “Students impress themselves with how far they can stretch their imaginations and develop their own unique style as storytellers.”
Whether you enjoy being the author of your own stories, crafting meaningful poems, or looking to improve your storytelling and writing skills, Creative Writing offers an exciting opportunity to express yourself while also fulfilling your English credit.
A current Creative Writing student, Simon Back, thoroughly enjoys coming to class.
“I think the class is great because it fosters creativity well, which is something most classes at the high school don’t emphasize as much,” Back said.
Creative Writing is designed to help students develop their writing skills through various forms of storytelling. You’ll explore different genres, including short stories, poetry, personal narratives, and even scriptwriting.
Classes often involve writing exercises, peer critiques, and discussions about famous literary works to inspire creativity. The environment is open and supportive, allowing students to experiment with new ideas and receive constructive feedback from both peers and the teacher.
Your senior year is the perfect time to try new things and take classes that spark your interests. Creative Writing offers both an academic benefit and a chance to explore your own creativity. If you’re looking for an English class or elective to take, Creative Writing could be the perfect choice!
