High school students are swamped with homework, tests, and extracurriculars, so why not add a job into the mix?
I truly believe applying for a job in high school is the best way to set you up for your future. Whether you’re looking for some extra cash or another activity to add to your college application, a job is the perfect way to gain some experience before entering the working world.
There are numerous jobs available to students in the North Shore area, and LFHS has its annual job fair to introduce students to those opportunities. Whether you want to coach little kids, wait on tables at your local restaurant, or even lifeguarding, having a small side job is a great way to gain a perception of hard work and earnings.
If no jobs in the area interest you, you can also consider starting your own business. Although it may seem intimidating, I imagine there is nothing more rewarding than building up a small, successful business that might spark a lifelong career.
On the flipside, trial and error is the best way to gain experience and learn about entrepreneurship.
“I always loved baking, so during my freshman year I decided to start a cookie business. It was pretty time consuming, but I really enjoyed it and actually got a lot of success out of it,” senior AJ Bielski said.
The summer before my senior year I realized my shopping addiction needed a bank account to support it. I decided to apply for a job at a local yoga studio in Lake Bluff. I spent my summer stacking weights, mopping floors, and cleaning mirrors. It was a great way to build a steady income and it was refreshing to make some of my own money.
After spending so much time at a yoga studio, I have discovered a newfound interest and I plan to take it a step further by getting certified to teach. Although a yoga instructor may not be a reliable, six figure salary, it’s a good side hustle to have throughout my adulthood, and more importantly, it’s a simple pleasure that is guaranteed to bring me joy when I’m feeling stressed or upset.
Who would’ve thought that a mindless application to a local business would spark such a passion? This is why I believe all students should apply for a job and get some exposure before heading to college.
