The Lake Forest Boys Varsity Basketball Team (11-7, 3-3) played the Mundelein Mustangs (8-13, 2-4) last Friday night, losing 32-31.
Mundelein came to town coming off of an eight point loss to Waukegan the Tuesday prior. The Scouts entered the game on a high note after beating Libertyville in a comeback win. Although the Scouts seemed to have momentum coming into the game, the big win might have been too much for the Scouts as they experienced what some would describe as a “hangover game.”
It was back-and-forth throughout the entirety of the game, but the energy that was seen two days prior seemed to be missing. Part of this could be attributed to the absence of starting guard Dominic Mordini as he did not play due to an illness.
Senior Charlie Markee was the leading scorer for the Scouts with ten, and senior Hudson Scroggins added eight of his own. Both teams played a stout defensive game, forcing each other into tough, low-percentage shots. The Mustangs made it clear early on that they were not going to let the Scouts score inside, which tends to be their primary scoring method.
The Scouts crawled their way back into the game as they worked to cut a ten point deficit throughout the second half. With 55 seconds left in the game, the Scouts took the lead 31-29 with a made three from sophomore Rory Haas. Mundelein, on their last possession, needed a basket to tie or take the lead. With 13 seconds left, a Mundelein three point shooter was fouled, resulting in three free throws. All three free throws were made giving Mundelein a one point lead. Lake Forest had a chance to win the game, but were unable to connect on the game-winning three. This loss marks their second home conference loss this season.
The Scouts return to action tonight against Vernon Hills at 7 P.M for an non-conference game.
