Flipping into a new season, the Girls Varsity Gymnastics team is looking to elevate their successes achieved in years past.
Last year, the team had a notable season filled with wins, broken records, and awards that have prepared them for a successful season to come. They were awarded NSC Conference champions, and four of the members of the team competed at the State meet.
Not only did the team make a place for themselves on the school record board, but many individuals climbed onto the ranks as well. Last year the entire team was very close to making it to State, but in the end they fell short.
That’s why the main focus this year is getting the entire team to make it to the State Championship, allowing each individual to make their mark on the program.
“This season we have set many goals, one being to keep our undefeated title and win our conference championship for the second year in a row. We also hope to get far into our State series run, showcasing the diverse talent of our team and the incredibly difficult and challenging skills this team is performing,” Head Coach Brittany Moccia said.
Therefore, the expectations for this season have been raised significantly.
“The team is definitely working extra hard this year because we want to do as well as we did last year, or better. It felt so rewarding to have all of our practice pay off, so we are doing everything that we can to have another successful season,” sophomore Lyla Drowne said.
To try to make these dreams a reality, the team has crafted ways to make sure that each member is as prepared as possible for every meet.
“Every practice a new goal is set, whether that be for a certain trick or event, in order to reach our highest potential. With this mentality I think that we have a good chance at being successful because having clear goals makes achieving them much easier,” Drowne said.
However, the team is also given space to practice in a way that promotes individual growth.
“I like when practices are more self paced because it doesn’t stress me out as much and I feel more comfortable doing my skills,” senior Ava Starks said. “As a team we do our best when we are all calm and feel confident with what we are doing. I think that when we have too much pressure or are stressed it negatively affects how we do, so our practices follow that.”
This team will definitely be one to keep an eye on as they are made up of many top tier athletes.
“We have a great group of hardworking and talented athletes who strive to train hard and build a great team system. They are always cheering for one another in practice and championing each other’s success. Having that positive team culture early on not only makes practices fun, but successful,” Moccia said.
