As I explored potential English classes for my senior year, I came across the intriguing course Grammar and Composition Honors.
I decided to take the course because I believed my understanding of grammar needed improvement before going off to college. Grammar is a very important skill that I knew would be a necessity in college as well as the following years.
“GCH offers the opportunity for students to understand how grammatical functions, punctuation, and a diverse vocabulary can help them better communicate,” GCH teacher Carolyn Konz said. “This level of understanding allows students to write effectively with confidence and clarity, which feels good before embarking on the next challenge.”
This class’s effectiveness is most prevalent in my college supplemental essays. A significant portion of the curriculum focuses on crafting application pieces, allowing us to apply what we learn in class directly to our supplemental applications. It is super beneficial to be able to utilize in class lessons to the work seniors have to do outside of school.
“I think it will be really helpful in college to have already taken a grammar class because there’s going to be many other aspects to focus on when writing papers rather than the grammar itself,” senior Gianna Lagunas said.
Throughout the course of the year, students in GCH classes are quickly able to bond. Everyone in the class has the same goal in wishing to improve their grammar, while also wanting to enhance their writing techniques.
“I love teaching this class for so many different reasons, but I think my favorite is watching seniors come in as classmates and leave as friends,” Konz said. “Plus, students are required to read their compositions out loud which allows for a wonderful bonding experience.”
If you’re looking for a class where you can have fun but still push yourself to become a better writer, Grammar and Composition Honors is the perfect class to add to your senior year courses.
“Grammar Comp is one of my favorite classes, it’s all around just a good group of people who can get work done but still have fun,” senior Arjan Jawanda said.
Grammar and Composition Honors is super important to take because it will help set students up for success in a fun and meaningful way. This class has by far been one of the best additions to my high school workload.
