Last school year Nate Williams and Tim Dan brought the International Nonprofit Christian Sports Club to our school. Fellowship of Christian Athletes is designed to bring athletes of the same faith together. Although Dan has tried this year to encourage any and all people to come.
“We like to say that if you’ve ever had to run to catch a bus, we consider you an athlete. So, it doesn’t matter if you’re not involved in a sport, or even if you don’t consider yourself a Christian – everyone is encouraged to learn more about FCA,” said leader Tim Dan.
Every meeting starts the same. They begin with a prayer led by one of the leaders or a volunteer. Then go onto a lesson, game, and/or a guest speaker. Every lesson shared is different and has a different value and meaning behind it. Roughly 20 students attend the Thursday morning meetings every other week.
“The lessons and new ways of approaching every day are what I love getting from the meetings. It can sometimes be a recalling of duty and what we are meant to do to share our beliefs, and sometimes it can be a new way of overcoming adversity in our lives with prayer and fortitude that we hadn’t realized we could,” said senior leader Danny Van Camp.
Students have shared that they become involved in this club in all different ways. Some having a friend in it. Some being new to their faith and want to learn more. Some who want to help spread the word of faith to peers.
Their goal is very simple, building a community of like-minded individuals. Teenagers tend to be more private about their beliefs so this club gives them the opportunity to connect and relate to their peers.
It also lets students expand their beliefs. Many households grow up on one belief system. Students now have a way of going on their own path with this club if they choose so. It is a safe haven for many students who feel as though their beliefs are not agreed within their home.
“We hope to bring these people together, and to lead them so they in turn can lead the rest of the school in virtue, love, and truth,” said Dan.
