After an exciting 31-12 win against Zion-Benton Township High School, the Lake Forest Varsity Football Team will defend their undefeated title as they prepare for a Homecoming game against Lake Zurich High School.
Early in the game, senior WR Charlie Markee scored a 42-yard touchdown to put the Scouts ahead 7-0. Senior RB Marty Hippel followed with a rushing touchdown, giving the Scouts a 14-6 lead. The defense didn’t get out to the hot start we’re used to seeing as they allowed 12 points in the first half. But thanks to a touchdown fumble recovery by senior LB Tim Dan, the Scouts led the Zee-Bees 21-12 going into halftime.
The Scouts opened up the second half with another rushing touchdown from Hippel to increase the lead to 16 points. The defense found their footing, and despite a couple big plays from Zion, were able to keep the Zee-Bees out of the end zone for the remainder of the game. With a field goal from Dan in the fourth quarter, the game finished with a final score of 31-12.
Although the Scouts ended with a win, senior Captain Finn Goodman says the team had expected the game to be an “easy win,” but were quickly proved otherwise.
“The reality is, every team in our conference is tough,” said Goodman. “After a bad play, you just have to let it slip your mind and move on. Everyone has those moments, and our teammates are always there to pick each other up.”
For this week’s game against Lake Zurich, Goodman says not letting Homecoming become a “distraction” will play a key role in their success.
“I love the traditions and have fun participating in them, as do we all. But when we’re at football, it has to be about preparation for the game. [Lake Zurich] beat us badly last year and it left a bitter taste in our mouths. So we need to be focused and ready to beat them,” said Goodman.
The team will continue their season, now, with a target on their backs. If the Scouts are able to pull off another win against Lake Zurich, they will be one of the first teams to secure a spot at playoffs.
