One of the most exciting parts about being a senior at LFHS is being able to use the senior commons. It’s a study hall space exclusively for seniors and a great place for them to socialize.
However, to many students, it’s a bit of a disappointment. There are some comfortable chairs and a handful of tables, but that’s it. The fact is, the senior commons is missing a few things that could make it a lot better.
For starters, students have complaints about the size of it.
“The senior commons is too small,” said senior Ben Smith. “Sometimes there isn’t enough seating for everyone.” Although making the senior commons bigger is a huge construction project, it is worth throwing out there and considering.
The size of the senior commons isn’t the only issue. Many students feel that there is more that could be added to make it more entertaining.
“They could add a couple T.V.s or a ping pong table,” said senior Bronson Kuever. “An entertainment area would be nice to have because you can use it once you’re done with your homework.”
Even adding more board games, a vending machine or more couches would be a nice addition. Anything that can make the senior commons more memorable or valuable would be a good fit.
The only problem with these suggestions is that they could be too much of a distraction for students actually trying to get homework done. However, the senior commons is already a place where students socialize. Isn’t that already distracting? If students really want a quiet space to get homework done, then the senior commons isn’t the place. There are plenty of other spots in the school for studying, such as the library and the Humanities Resource Center.
These additions can be expensive, but there are multiple ways to generate enough money. Grants from the LFHS Boosters are usually geared toward athletics and technology, but sending a small percentage of funds toward the senior commons improvements is very possible. A fundraiser for senior commons improvements is another possibility.
At the end of the day, anything added to the senior commons that is fun or interesting would make it more exciting. It just needs a few additions so that the underclassmen have something to anticipate for their own senior year.
